If you are using verbenone this year to help protect your valuable pine trees from the mountain pine beetle, here are five things you should know:
- For acreages, apply verbenone on a grid pattern. A 35-foot grid will require approximately 35 pouches. To maintain the grid, apply verbenone to another species or object if necessary.
- For small areas (only a few trees), use two pouches if possible. Place one at a height that is within easy reach (approximately six feet) and another at 12 feet if it is safe to do so.
- Always attach pouches to the north face of the tree. Keep the pouches out of the sun to help control the release rate.
- Beetles will generally fly with the wind, so as a first line of defense, apply an extra row of pouches to trees on the prevailing wind side of your property.
- Now is the time to apply verbenone. Beetles are starting to fly in most areas and will gain in numbers over the next several weeks. If you applied in May or June, consider a second application before mid-July.
Thank you for helping to protect valuable pine trees. Arborists calculate that a mature pine is worth $500 to $2,000 and that the true cost of benefits lost when a pine dies may be $20,000 or more. Landowners who have lost trees to the mountain pine beetle, know all too well the value of their trees.
