So far the only thing I have seen which works is to trap them
and relocate them in an open, unpopulated area. Unless you know
what you're doing, it's best to have a professional do this.
Racoons are mean when Cornered, get themselves in some really
tight jams (like in between your raised Garage Door and the Ceiling?)
where they can't immediately retreat, and are potential carriers of
roundworms, Rabies, and other pests such as fleas or ticks with their
own variety of diseases. I had this problem in Kansas City,
and 2 places I've lived in California. Be careful even removing their
poop from your yard, as it's likely infested with pests.
in short, the only solutions are a: Trap & relocate B: wait until
the season changes (if they haven't made a home there they may only
be visiting for food/water and will disappear when the weather changes)
or c: learn to live with them and do stuff to assure they don't penetrate
your home.
Racoons like to dig for grubs in the yard, and in my case, they prefer
Koi & Goldfish out of my pond, esp. if the water level goes low enough,
but only in Dry season (April-October in CA) when they're really starving.
