What is Tree Tanglefoot Insect Barrier?

Tree Tanglefoot Insect Barrier is a sticky coating made from natural gum resins, vegetable oil, and wax. When applied as a continuous band around the trunks of trees, it creates a barrier that entraps or repels destructive climbing insects. Tree Tanglefoot is available in several sizes.

Back to Questions

Is it a pesticide?

No. The combination of ingredients is non-toxic to insects, humans, pets and the environment. Tree Tanglefoot works strictly as a mechanical barrier.

Back to Questions

How much should I apply?

Apply Tree Tanglefoot Insect Barrier in a uniform fashion. Use a light coating for smaller insects and areas and a heavier coating for larger insects and areas. For ease of cleaning and to protect the tree, wrap a band Tanglefoot Paper Tree Wrap around trunk, then coat with Tree Tanglefoot.

Back to Questions

Will Tree Tanglefoot Insect Barrier damage the tree’s bark?

Tree Tanglefoot will not damage trees but if a banding material is not used with the product, a permanent stain may occur.

Back to Questions

How do I use Tanglefoot Paper Tree Wrap and Tree Tanglefoot?

Fasten a band of Tanglefoot Paper Barrier or similar waterproof material around trunk. On rough bark trees, plug gaps under band with cotton batting or similar material. Do not apply directly to young, thin-barked trees or to bearing fruit or nut trees. Apply Tree Tanglefoot to banding material using putty knife or disposable paddle to spread 3” by 1/16” thick. When sticky surface becomes covered with insects or debris, remove banding and repeat. Remove bands at end of season.

Back to Questions

How long does Tree Tanglefoot Insect Barrier stay effective?

Tree Tanglefoot Insect Barrier will remain sticky and effective until it is covered with insects, dust or other debris.

Back to Questions

How are the sticky barriers maintained?

Barriers should be inspected frequently during the insect season. A build-up of debris or insects will create a bridge for other insects to cross. Remove and reapply if necessary.

Back to Questions

How is Tree Tanglefoot Insect Barrier removed?

Clean tools with mineral spirits or baby oil. Citrus-based cleaners may also be used. Dry cleaning is recommended if product contacts clothing.
