Adult Japanese Beetles are about ½” (1.27cm) long and are shiny metallic green in color except for hard, coppery-brown wings. Distinguishing features are a row of white hair patches below the edges of the wings on each side, and two spots at the tail. Females are just slightly larger than males.
Depending on the temperature, the beetles emerge from the turf as early as May in the south and July in the north. They live for about eight weeks in a life cycle of continuous eating, mating and egg-laying before dying. The mature insect flies only in the daytime, preferring warm sunny days. They are most active at mid-day in open sunlight, feeding on many different flowers and trees. Their favourite targets are roses, fruit trees, grapes and berries. Females alternate between feeding and egg-laying in the turf.
The Japanese Beetle Traps are proven products used by homeowners, commercial growers, governments and researchers on a worldwide basis. The traps contain the key design features that have proven most effective over 50 years of testing and field experience. Their omni-directional shape, smooth poly surface, scientifically tapered cone and attractive, permanent yellow color combine for highly efficient Japanese Beetle trapping.
The beetles become trapped because they cannot fly vertically out of the container. Remove the bottom holding container of the trap for easy emptying. Beetles cannot chew their way out through the container, as has been known to happen with the plastic bag traps. The slight additional weight of the Tanglefoot traps helps to keep the trap vertical, even in a brisk breeze, while the slots permit drainage.
The TBC model trap has a fixed-area container, the Xpando trap features a larger capacity.
The traps come with both the sex and floral lures, used for attracting male and female beetles.
Hang the Japanese Beetle trap on a metal rod (such as our trap stand), using the attachment located on the trap and ensure that it is at least 8 to 25 feet (2.5 to 7.5 meters) downwind from the plants that you are protecting.
Both traps can be used year after year. Replacement Bait kits are available separately, as is the Tanglefoot Rod Stand, a heavy-duty 54” tall trap stand.
